Where are Windows Store apps installed and how to access the folder

UWP applications can be accessed and started by clicking Tiles on Windows Start. But where are they installed or located? Universal or Windows Store apps in Windows 10/8 are installed in the WindowsApps Folder located at C: Program Files. It is a Hidden folder, so to see it you will have to open Folder Options first and check Show hidden files, folders and drives Option.

You should now be able to see the WindowsApps folder in C: Program Files.

Access or open the Windows Applications folder

Before you read further, we suggest that you create a system restore point first.

Now, if you try to click on it to open it, you won’t be allowed, but instead you’ll see the following roadblock.

Clicking Continue will open the following warning box, indicating that you have been denied access to this folder.

To get access to the WindowsApps folder, click the Security tab link. The following Properties box will open.

To be able to view the contents of a folder, you must have at least Read permission. Click Advanced to open Security Settings nâng cao for protected folder.

Clicking Continue opens a box that lists permission entries for the folder. Now you will have to give yourself permission and you can do so by changing the Owner from TrustedInstaller to your name. Please note that, as an example, I have given myself full permissions, but you can give yourself limited permissions when asked, by editing the permissions entries from its settings.

You can click on the desired entry and click View to view the individual permission entries and make changes there. However, you will have to change Owner/Investor first.

To do so, click Change in the previous step and enter the object name and click Check Names too, as this will check if you entered the correct name and correct it if you haven’t.

I repeat, as an example, I have given myself full permissions, but you can give yourself limited permissions when asked, by editing the permission entries from its settings, as shown displayed in the Permissions entry box above.

Permissions will be changed and a dialog box will be displayed.

You will have to close the explorer window and reopen it.

You should now be able to click open on the WindowsApps folder and see its contents.

Any hacker or malware that gains access to this directory can maliciously modify the application source code. So it might be a good idea if you change the permissions back to default, after you’ve done your work. To do this, simply reverse or undo the changes you made in advanced Security Settings.

If you want to just see a list of all apps with their shortcuts, you can copy and paste the following into the address bar of the explorer and press Enter to open the following Applications folder:

explorer.exe shell:::{4234d49b-0245-4df3-B780-3893943456e1}

Using this way, you can change the permissions of any folder in Windows.

To reverse the changes, you need to retrace your steps and undo the changes you made – or else you can revert to the created system restore point.
