One of the original social networks, we find that Twitter is often misunderstood the most.
Recent studies from Edison Research paints a fascinating picture of Twitter and its role in the US social media ecosystem. We're used to going to school by the annual Infinite Dial report (see our summary article: 2021 Social Media Usage Statistics ) and Edison took that to the next level with a special look at Twitter Before and After Trump to determine the extent of Twitter's influence on the general psyche of Americans.
Here are some shocking stats about post-Trump Twitter that I didn't anticipate.
More people are using Twitter
Twitter users returned to the platform shortly after Trump. A little background: On January 8, 2021, Twitter banned then-President Donald Trump from using the platform. After the ban, daily Twitter use increased by five points, to 29% after the ban by social network users aged 18+.

While political libertarian users grew by 24%, there was also an increase in politically conservative social media users, from 18% to 21% post-bans.
Americans Agree that Social Media Spreads Misinformation
Americans on both sides of the political spectrum are suspicious of social media sites and the misinformation that can spread on platforms. Even so, Twitter is still indexed by political conservatives as untrustworthy 29% of Politically liberal social media users do not trust news and information viewed seen on Twitter.
Most liberals and conservatives agree that social media spreads disinformation and conspiracy. Who to blame? Well, almost 70% of both sides of the aisle agree that social media companies should be held accountable for the type of content they promote.
Liberals and conservatives agree: there is too much misinformation being shared on society.
Twitter succeeds at converting awareness into usage
Although Twitter is known by 88% of Americans, only 23% of Americans 12 and older use Twitter. As a result, one in four Americans who know about Twitter actually uses Twitter.

Compare that rate with Facebook, where 93% have heard of it and 61% have a profile. Even so, Twitter usage has increased from 19% of Americans just two years ago. Twitter usage in 2021 matches TikTok usage in 2021, and boasts more Americans using the social network than LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Parler.
Kids think Twitter is fine
Young Americans, ages 12 to 34, are the most popular Twitter users. More than a third of US social media users are using Twitter, up from 29% in the past two years. Compare that to just 10% of senior Americans over the age of 55, who spend most of their social media time on Facebook.
For young people, Twitter is on the list of most frequently used social networking sites, behind Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok.
The same goes for moms' tweets
Mothers made a big change to Twitter in 2021. In fact, the Mothers and Media Report
of Edison identified a 50% increase from 2020 among Mothers who identified as having used Twitter.
As for social platforms, Twitter barely overtakes TikTok among Moms, although Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram capture Mom's attention the most on social media. Now that mothers spend more than 4 hours a day using the Internet, there is enough time to go everywhere!
