Every website needs two essential elements, hosting and domain name, these two factors need to be linked together, also known as pointing the domain name to hosting. In there:

  • Hosting is the place where all the data of the website is stored.

  • Domain name: is the website address, also a place for visitors to know information about your services and products.

To point your domain name to another hosting, you can do 1 of 2 ways below:

Method 1: Point the domain name to the hosting's IP address

Step 1: On Hosting specify the IP address

Actually, on the hosting information mail, you can find the IP address. But note that sometimes this is not the IP address that the user can point to, in this case it will lead to the defaultwebpage.cgi error message. To fix this error, you need to clear the entire browser cache or use an incognito browser.

You log in to cPanel to get the most accurate IP address. On the Domains section, select “Advanced Zone Editor”. Here, the IP address will be displayed on the screen. Once you know the IP address, you can point the domain name to the IP. At this point, the IP address will appear. Once you get the IP, you point the domain name to the IP.

You need to choose a name server for the domain name because you do not use the name server of the Hosting agent in the following 2 cases:

  • Use an intermediary name server, like CloudFlare, Namecheap's PowerDNS

  • Use the domain provider's default name server.

Step 2: Use the domain name registrar's name server

During the default domain name registration process, most people usually use the name server provided by the provider. In case you point to the name server then you need to point back. Once you are sure that the domain name points to the correct name server address, you need to take the next step based on the provider's instructions to point to the IP Hosting. Finally, you wait for the new IP update system to complete.

In addition to using the domain name provider's name server, you need to use an intermediate name server

Method 2: Point the domain name to Hosting's Name Server

After hosting is activated, you will receive an email with all the necessary information for management. In the email, there are 2 Name server addresses.

For example, an email from a hosting agent hawkhost:

  • New Account Information:

  • Domain: yoursite.com

  • Username: yoursiteco

  • Password: …

  • Hosting Package: Primary

  • Shared/Dedicated IP: Refer to your control panel

  • Nameserver 1: ns9.hawkhost.com

  • Nameserver 2: ns10.hawkhost.com

Next, you go to the domain management page, change the name server. After that, wait for the domain name to be updated to complete.

Note: if the hosting uses cPanel, after changing the name server, and you also want to change the records, go to cPanel, select "Advanced Zone Editor" to proceed with configuration.
