Ultraviolence - an enchanting voice of Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey

Before spending two weeks in the studio with producer Dan Auerbach, Lana Del Rey herself didn't think she would make another album. “What I wanted to say, I have already said…”, she shared and then wrote sad poems again, sang again and her 3rd album continued to fascinate listeners.

“Ultraviolence” can be seen as the result of artistic affinity. The Black Keys guitarist ran into the singer in New York for the first time at a night party with some friends in the music production world. “Before that, neither of us really listened to each other's music. I know Lana the way everyone in the world knows, she's so famous in the press! We talked and got along, and then she and I scheduled a two-day appointment to go back to the studio in Nashville to play music with some musicians,” Dan Auerbach recalls.

The 2 day date eventually turned into a 2 week recording plan. All songs on the album are co-written by both Lana Del Rey and Dan Auerbach. Lana later shared that she had an authentic experience of inspiration while working with Dan. “He wrote the music and I performed the singing, wrote the lyrics, which are the poems that I thought I would keep in a long notebook because after 3 years of putting all my energy into music, I feel I have run out of emotions.”

Of course, if you already know Lana's famous hits like "Video games" or "Summer sadness", don't expect the excitement to be evident through the music. “Ultraviolence” remains a solid record in the Lana Del Rey style with the elements that make her alluring: sad and classic.

Behind the image of a beautiful and somewhat fragile girl is a life with many ups and downs. At the age of 15, little Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (Lana's real name) was involved in drugs and alcohol. Having a sensitive soul, Lana always observes the surrounding life with her own eyes and records through the poems in her notebook.

“It seems that boredom is part of my personality. Ever since I was a child, I have found life to be sad and boring. Then when I grew up, I discovered that the friends around me also did not find much joy. They are lonely and bored with the 'American dream' today…”, Lana shared in an interview with Rolling Stone. Even the first two songs of the album, "Cruel world" and "Ultraviolence", listeners felt the contents of the generation that began to exclude Lady Gaga or Katy Perry from the playlist.

The love in Lana Del Rey's songs is always full of compassion and love. I don't know if I should call it beautiful, but it's never perfect. Like “he is selfish but I love him unconditionally” in the sad ballad “Shades of cool”. Lana has stated that she is not a supporter of feminism. Her music speaks for itself quite clearly. Always see a glimpse of the image of a girl who loves unrequitedly, she always waits for him to come to comfort and love, and when he "stumbles" and then leaves, she does not blame but embraces her own loneliness myself (“Pretty when you cry”). Or “The other woman” is also another story about an abandoned woman even though the character is in the third person.

Interspersed with sad love tones, "Ultraviolence" also has faster beats, balancing the general slow atmosphere of the record. "West Coast" was chosen as the album's first single, which is quite an impressive mix. The song has a very strong cinematic nature, as if we were listening to the soundtrack of a classic movie composed by Ennio Morricone. Or “Florida kilos”, the last track but with the brightest tones on the album. The reggae guitar verse leads the cheerful rhythm, making Lana's voice surprisingly sexy.

On this album, Lana Del Rey completely rejected the influence of hip hop. That can be explained by Dan Auerbach's role as producer. “Ultraviolence” blends many colors, from jazz, blues to rock, psychedelic but there is no denying that the leader of The Black Keys has an excellent harmonization product. The music not only beautifies Lana's singing style but also serves as an important half of the overall album.

Like Amy Winehouse, Adele, or later Lorde, Lana Del Rey was another voice in popular music. A voice that is not polished or entertaining, a voice that is sad but is the true heart of today's listeners.
